According to Jashemski, this area, from which old construction had been cleared after the earthquake, was identified by Fiorelli as a plant nursery.
The plant-bed at the right of the entrance (on the right of the photo) was originally outlined by 12 amphorae.
These had their tops broken off, had been filled with soil and been sunk into the ground.
They were used to start the seedling growing.
